Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council is investing £1.5million in creating a fantastic new public space in the heart of Darwen: Darwen Market Square.

Through consultation, the square has been designed for large scale events, socialising, relaxing, reflection and potentially even retail, with the people who live and work in Darwen as well its many visitors in mind. A key focus has been on creating a balance between a future looking, contemporary, fit for purpose space whilst observing and preserving the attractive natural and historical features within and around the site.

Once complete you can expect to see;

  • A large open space to cater for community and large scale events
  • A green garden area to meet with friends, for children to play or enjoy the sunshine whilst eating your lunch
  • Seating areas where you can relax whilst appreciating the high quality craftsmanship of the artwork within the site
  • The potential for a retail offer
  • Stunning views from Railway Road across Darwen to the its green surroundings

Darwen Market Square development began at the end of May 2018. During the works there will inevitably be some disruption, this will be kept to a minimum and information will be published on this website to keep people informed.

We're creating a public space that can support large scale outdoor events, an area with green landscaping for sitting, playing and relaxing and the potential for new retailers within the larger refurbished units.

British designer and artist Liam Hopkins is creating bespoke art pieces for the new market square and sharing his process with us throughout. Working with the people of Darwen he has been taking part in events, researching it’s history and visiting everywhere from the market to the leisure centre and more to speak with as many people as possible. Capturing images and stories from our community and town is a key part of his artistic process following which he begins to develop ideas, turning all that rich material into something beautiful for the different areas of the Market Square.

``I am delighted to be working in Darwen, looking at the local history of the place and getting to know the people by listening to their stories.`` - Liam Hopkins

Work begins in Spring 2018 and completion is set for Autumn/Winter 2018

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council worked closely with Darwen Town Centre Partnership Board and the Heart of Darwen Design Reference Group, amongst others, to gain invaluable input into the design process and ultimately the final layout plans you see in the image.

There will inevitably be some disruption whilst we create this vibrant new public space. We will work hard with businesses to minimise the impact of the works and we would ask residents for your patience and to support local businesses, which will remain open, for the duration.”” – Councillor Phil Riley
