It’s almost the end of term! Who’s excited for the long summer school holiday? We certainly are in Darwen Town Centre, especially as we’re kicking off the summer with three fantastic free events at Darwen Market.
Here’s what’s in store…
Sat 22nd July, 11:30am and 1:30pm: Watch Live Shows, The Wagon of Dreams
Jellyfish Theatre is a touring theatre company who “make heat-warming theatre for young audiences.” They’re bringing their vibrant show, The Wagon of Dreams, to Darwen Market Square on Saturday 22nd July.
This is an interactive performance about an exciting ocean adventure with plenty of songs, puppetry and audience involvement, ideal for children aged 4 to 8. Expect a relaxed family vibe with integrated Sign Supported English.
Darwen Market Square is being treated to two performances of The Wagon of Dreams, the first at 11:30am and second at 1:30pm, with each performance lasting 55 minutes.
We recommend bringing a blanket to sit on, plus sunscreen in case the sun makes an appearance!
(Please check back here and on the Event Calendar for last minute changes due to weather.)
Mon 24th July, 11am till 3pm: Create Together, Written in Sand Workshop
You don’t need to go to the beach to play in the sand this summer, just come down to Darwen Market on Monday 24th July for our Written in Sand workshop.
This event is led by land artist, Winston Plowes, who uses nature such as leaves, shells, bamboo canes, seaweed, sand and pebbles to create mesmerising pieces of art, with the Earth as his canvas.
In this workshop you’ll be able to create a mini sand picture, and/or contribute to a larger community piece. Drop in to Darwen Market between 11am and 3pm to take part.
Who knows, maybe the workshop will inspire you to create more environmental art over the summer? We’re certainly not short of nature here in Darwen!
Wed 26th July, 11am till 3pm: Make & Take Home, Cyanotype Printing Workshop
If you’re interested in learning new creative skills and visual storytelling, this workshop is for you!
Ruby Nixon is a visual artist who specialises in photographic processes, analogue printing and sharing stories, and she’s coming to Darwen Market to teach us how to make our own cyanotype prints.
Cyanotype is a camera-less form of photography where you use everyday objects, a special chemical solution and UV light to create beautiful blue and white prints with a mystical feel.
Feel free to bring your own personal bits and bobs to make your prints, or use nature as your inspiration and bring some plant clippings or dried flowers. Don’t worry if you forget though, as Ruby will provide all materials needed.
Just call in Darwen Market between 11am and 3pm to join in and create a unique cyanotype print to take home.
