Council Supports Innovative New Singing Initiative to Boost Community Confidence and Wellbeing in Darwen
Blackburn with Darwen Council is proud to announce its support for begin2sing — an exciting new series of vocal workshops designed to build confidence, strengthen community ties, and promote positive mental health through the power of music.
Developed by award-winning vocal coach of 22 years and hit songwriter Paul Stuart Davies — co-founder of Darwen School of Music — begin2sing brings professional-quality singing coaching to those who might otherwise be unable to access it.
The workshops are entirely free to participants and include custom-made vocal exercises, live piano accompaniment, and a mix of British classics and a purpose-written original song, all designed to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to find their voice. If you love Adele, Queen, Take That and David Bowie you are in for a treat!
Councillor Quesir Mahmood, Deputy Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council and Executive Member for Growth and Development said:
“We’re thrilled to help bring begin2sing to our community. Singing is a powerful tool for personal development and emotional wellbeing. This initiative reflects our commitment to inclusive arts opportunities and supports residents in building confidence and connecting with others.”
Paul Stuart Davies added:
“Darwen is a hub for live music, and I’ve seen first-hand the confidence and joy that singing can bring to people of all ages. begin2sing is about making those benefits accessible to everyone — not just those who can afford private lessons. I’m incredibly grateful to the Council for supporting this vision and helping us bring music, confidence, and community spirit to life.”
Monthly workshops at Sunbird Records in Darwen Town Centre
Starting in August, each monthly workshop day will be held at Sunbird Records, who are a grassroots performance venue. Sunbird are known for championing new talent and have kindly donated the space for the sessions.
There will be three 90-minute sessions catering to different age groups — from children (7-11 years, 12-16 years) to adults (17+) — culminating in live performances at venues such as Darwen Library Theatre and a performance at Darwen Christmas Light Switch on. Future plans include an annual concert and recording and releasing an original track on global streaming platforms.
Workshops are designed to be accessible, with no prior experience or materials required. All exercises will be made available online to those who attend, encouraging continued development and participation beyond the sessions.
This initiative, funded through UK Government funding, marks a meaningful investment in the arts, community cohesion, and the health and wellbeing of our residents.
