Try award winning homemade pies at The Pie Hole in Darwen
The shop regularly sells out of pies, as both locals and those from much further afield head down early to try the unique flavour combinations. Take some pies home for an easy and delicious tea, or eat there and then with mashed potato, peas and gravy.
The yearly British Pie awards take place at the rural capital of food, Melton Mowbray, and it’s wonderful to see an independent Darwen business get the appreciation they deserve! We’re lucky to have this foodie haven in Darwen Town Centre and within the #shopdarwen campaign, if you haven’t tried them yet, you really are missing out.

Create your ultimate sandwich at Gilly’s in Darwen Market
Head south from The Pie Hole and into the heart of the town, Darwen Market, and you’ll find Gilly’s Salad & Sandwich Bar, a welcoming stall which is always busy with hungry shoppers and workers on their lunch break. Gilly’s do everything from salad boxes, jacket potatoes, cooked meats, pastries, cakes and chutneys, but they’re best known for their made-to-order sandwiches. Pick from delicious selection of hand-carved meats or a freshly made sandwich filling and then load up on whatever extras take your fancy; fresh crunchy salad, creamy coleslaw, boiled eggs, tangy chutneys… you’re free to create the butty of your dreams!

The Lancashire Telegraphs Best Sandwich Shop
There’s always a queue at Gilly’s, so it’s no surprise that they have been named in the Lancashire Telegraph’s Top 10 Sandwich Shops in East Lancashire, a fantastic achievement!
But now they need your help.
Readers of The Lancashire Telegraph have until Saturday 28th March to get their hands on a voting slip (inside the paper) and cast their vote. Ruth, Peter and the whole team at Gilly’s would greatly appreciate your vote! We’d love to see them crowned as the best sandwich shop in East Lancashire, find out more on the Lancashire Telegraph website.
