Multi-million pound investment for Darwen Town Centre
There’s a massive amount of exciting new investment planned for Darwen Town Centre, including over £20m for Darwen Market, the library and library theatre and Darwen Youth Centre.
And there’s a further £20m of new funding available through the Government’s Long-Term Plan for Towns Scheme.
The major projects need detailed planning – both to make sure what we do is right and, given they are all so close together, the schemes are all carefully co-ordinated.
Here’s an update on plans for Darwen Youth Centre, Darwen Market and Darwen Library & Library theatre…
Darwen Youth Centre
The Knott Street site has £3.3m of new funding. The existing structure with double in size, with a new floor being added, and the plans for the new building are seriously exciting – you can read more here.
Planning permission has already been secured, and the youth centre is due to close on 31st March so that work can begin.
Darwen Youth Zone’s new base on Railway Road will continue to operate throughout.
Darwen Market
Millions of pounds have been set aside to restore the historic Darwen Market Hall, and ensure that it remains at the heart of the town for future generations.
Darwen Market’s traders are expected to move to a temporary market at the beginning of 2025, and will continue to trade while the work takes place – please continue to shop small and support your local market. Keep an eye on our news page for more details.
Darwen Library & Library Theatre
Our beautiful Carnegie library and library theatre will benefit from major investment, with plans to be announced in the coming months.
Work is expect to start this year, but rest assured that Darwen Library Theatre will indeed be a main venue for this year’s Darwen Live, which will take place on 25th and 26th of May.
